BENTLEY GOOD COMPANIONS have won the
CMS YORKSHIRE LEAGUE’S UNISON DIVISION ONE TOP FOUR TROPHY.
The Doncaster outfit accounted for
OSSETT TRINITY 24-14 in a compelling decider at Normanton.
Ken Tinsdale reports
Like the Top Four finals in the other Divisions, this one offered quality and commitment.
Ossett where slight favourites to lift the Trophy and started well but it was Bentley who scored
first when Ashley Williams scored in the corner. Craig Whincop converted with a well struck kick that went straight between the posts, 6-0.
Ossett finally got off the bus and after some good work from the forwards Lee Tolson scored a try and Sid Lindsey converted 6-6.
Bentley got caught offside soon after which gave Sid Lindsay an easy shot at goal to put Ossett in front 6-8.
With half-time approaching and Bentley attacking Ossett slipped offside and up popped Whincop to level the
scores at 8-8 at the interval.
The second half got under way with both teams playing open attacking rugby, and it clearly wouldn’t be long before one of them would break through.
That team was Bentley, when Ashley Williams
scored out wide.
Back came Ossett five minutes later, and in went Anthony Lindsey
at the side of the post for Sid Lindsey to convert and put Trinity 14-12 ahead.
The game was going from end to end, and nobody could predict the outcome, but Man of the Match Paul Purnell scored and Whincop converted to give a score of 18-14 to Bentley.
Attack after attack came from Ossett but when Tolson dived over for what he thought was going to be the winning try he dropped the ball - and from that mistake Bentley went down the field and Ashley Williams claimed his hat-trick, Whincop improving for a 24-14 win.
