Award winning developer Waystone Ltd has confirmed that it has signed an agreement that guarantees the land required for a proposed new stadium for Castleford Tigers Rugby League club writes Dave Smart.
The landmark agreement is a major step forward for the elite Super League club that has long campaigned for a new state of art facility that will reflect its world class status and support its future aspirations.
Waystone has already secured planning consent and is preparing the development platform for the stadium on a 20 acre plot at its hugely successful mixed used development at Glasshoughton. The 335 acre site is already home to a number of attractions including Xscape and the Designer Outlet Village and more recently the new state of the art learning facility for Wakefield College.
Stuart McLoughlin, Managing Director at Waystone said: “We are delighted to support Cas Tigers on their road to secure a new home for a Super League future. Glasshoughton attracts 3.5 million visitors each year. With major infrastructure, such as an adjacent railway station and direct motorway access, already in place it provides the ideal location for a new stadium facility.
The official signing of the agreement means that stadium plans can now progress with hopes to start the build programme as soon as spring 2011. Architects Ramsden & Partners have already been appointed to draw up detailed plans to support the reserved matters planning application. In the longer term Waystone hopes to be able to add further leisure provisions to the stadium site to enhance the overall offer to the local community.
Tigers Chief Executive Richard Wright said: “This Agreement secures the 20 acre site at Glasshoughton on behalf of the Club and is another step forward in delivering the stadium. We have an excellent working relationship with Stuart McLoughlin and Waystone and this has enabled us to advance the stadium to this point. Our next objective is to complete the detailed design and this process is now well underway”.
